Vardenafil can remain active for several hours, providing a suitable window for sexual activity without causing an erection throughout that entire period.

During sexual stimulation, the body releases nitric oxide inside the penis. This increases the level of cyclic guanosine monophosphate, commonly called cGMP. The increased cGMP relaxes the blood vessels and allows more blood to enter the erectile tissues.

An enzyme called PDE5 breaks down cGMP and reduces this blood flow. Vardenafil blocks PDE5, allowing cGMP to remain active for longer. This helps produce a firmer erection and makes it easier to maintain during sexual activity.

Vilitra supports the body’s natural response to arousal. Without sexual stimulation, the medicine will not produce its intended erection-supporting effect.

The usual starting dose of vardenafil for most adult men is 10 mg taken approximately 25 to 60 minutes before sexual activity. Depending on the response and side effects, the dose can be reduced to 5 mg or increased to 20 mg.

Therefore, Vilitra 20 mg contains the maximum commonly recommended single dose of vardenafil and should not be considered the starting dose for every patient. Swallow the prescribed tablet with water and do not take more than one dose within 24 hours.

Vilitra can be taken with or without food, but a heavy or high-fat meal can delay its action. The 20 mg strength may be unsuitable for older adults, people with liver problems, men taking alpha-blockers and those using medicines that increase vardenafil levels.

Common Side Effects: Vilitra 20 mg can cause headache, facial flushing, a blocked or runny nose, indigestion, dizziness, nausea and back pain. These effects are generally mild and improve as the medicine wears off. Speak with a healthcare professional if they remain troublesome, become severe or continue for longer than expected.

Serious Side Effects: Stop taking the medicine and seek urgent medical help for chest pain, fainting, severe dizziness, a serious change in heartbeat, sudden vision loss, sudden hearing loss, swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty or an erection lasting longer than four hours. An erection that continues beyond four hours requires immediate treatment to prevent permanent damage.

Vilitra 20 mg is not suitable for everyone. It should be avoided by:

• People allergic to vardenafil

• People taking nitrates or nitric oxide donors

• People using recreational nitrites or “poppers”

• People taking riociguat

• People with very low blood pressure

• People with unstable angina or severe heart failure

• People recently affected by a heart attack or stroke

• People advised to avoid sexual activity

• People with severe liver disease

• People receiving kidney dialysis

• Women and people below 18 years of age

Men with penile deformities, blood-cell disorders or conditions that increase the risk of a prolonged erection require an individual medical assessment before using vardenafil.

Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements being used.

Important interactions include:

• HIV protease inhibitors

Nitrates and riociguat must not be combined with Vilitra because they can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. Ritonavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole, erythromycin and clarithromycin can greatly increase vardenafil levels, making the 20 mg strength unsuitable.

Do not combine Vilitra with sildenafil, tadalafil, avanafil or another vardenafil medicine unless specifically instructed by a healthcare professional. Grapefruit products should also be avoided because they can affect how the body processes vardenafil.

• Keep the medicine away from children and pets.

• Do not use damaged or discoloured tablets.

• Do not use the medicine after its expiry date.

• Do not flush unused tablets down a toilet.
