Tadalafil is a prescription medicine commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It is the active ingredient in Cialis and many generic Cialis products.

FeaturedTadalafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5, or PDE5, inhibitor prescribed for men who have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection firm enough for sexual activity.
Cialis is a tadalafil brand. A generic Cialis medicine contains the same active ingredient but may have a different appearance, manufacturer or inactive ingredients. Tadalafil is called the weekend pill because its effect on erection response may last for up to 36 hours in some people. This does not mean an erection lasts for 36 hours.
Some Cialis tablets are yellow, leading to the search term yellow pill. However, tadalafil tablets vary in shape and colour. Appearance alone cannot confirm a product's ingredient, quality or authenticity.
During sexual stimulation, tadalafil supports the process that relaxes blood vessels and increases penile blood flow. Sexual stimulation is still required.
Tadalafil manages erectile dysfunction symptoms but does not permanently cure ED or increase sexual desire. It does not prevent pregnancy or protect against sexually transmitted infections.
Erection problems may be connected to health, lifestyle or other medicines. A professional can assess possible causes and recommend appropriate men's health support.
Sexual dysfunction can include low desire, ejaculation problems, pain and erection difficulties. Tadalafil treats erectile dysfunction, not every sexual problem. Seek professional advice for persistent symptoms.
Doctors may prescribe tadalafil for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. Symptoms can include a weak urine stream, difficulty starting, incomplete bladder emptying, or frequent or urgent urination.
The treatment schedule for BPH may differ from as-needed ED treatment. Do not change the dose or schedule without advice from the prescriber.
Tadalafil is also used in specific products and schedules for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a type of pulmonary hypertension affecting lung blood vessels.
Do not substitute a tadalafil ED product for PAH treatment. Pulmonary hypertension requires specialist diagnosis, monitoring and instructions.
Tell the prescriber about your conditions and medicines, especially heart, liver or kidney problems; low blood pressure; a recent heart attack or stroke; eye conditions; bleeding disorders; ulcers; or prolonged erections.
Do not use tadalafil with:
Nitrate medicines used for chest pain, such as nitroglycerin
Recreational nitrates known as “poppers”
Riociguat or another guanylate cyclase stimulator
Another tadalafil product or PDE5 inhibitor unless a doctor approves it
Combining tadalafil with nitrates can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. Alpha-blockers, blood-pressure medicines and certain antifungal, antibiotic or antiviral medicines may also interact with tadalafil. A doctor or pharmacist should review your medicines before treatment.
Common side effects may include headache, indigestion, flushing, nausea, a blocked nose, dizziness, back pain, muscle aches or limb pain. Avoid driving if you feel dizzy or your vision is affected.
Stop taking tadalafil and seek urgent medical help for chest pain, a serious allergic reaction, sudden loss of vision, sudden reduction or loss of hearing, or an erection lasting longer than four hours. Tell emergency medical staff when tadalafil was taken, especially if chest pain occurs.
Follow the strength and schedule prescribed for you.
Read the patient information supplied with the specific product.
Do not take more than directed or combine ED medicines.
Avoid excessive alcohol because it may increase dizziness and low blood pressure.
Never share prescription medicine with another person.
Check active ingredients to avoid taking two tadalafil products together.
Buy clearly labelled medicine from a properly licensed pharmacy that requires a prescription where applicable.
A product promoted only as a “weekend pill” or “yellow pill” may be counterfeit, incorrectly dosed or contain an undeclared ingredient. Check the manufacturer, packaging, expiry date and pharmacy credentials rather than relying on appearance or an unusually low price.
