What Is Forxiga 5 mg?
Forxiga 5 mg is an oral medicine containing 5 mg of dapagliflozin. Dapagliflozin belongs to a group of medicines called sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, commonly shortened to SGLT2 inhibitors.
Dapagliflozin works through the kidneys rather than directly increasing insulin production. It reduces the amount of glucose and sodium returned to the bloodstream after the kidneys filter the blood.
Forxiga as a medicine is used for type 2 diabetes, symptomatic chronic heart failure and chronic kidney disease. However, the 5 mg strength is not automatically the standard dose for all three conditions.
Current Forxiga product information recommends 10 mg once daily for its main indications. The 5 mg tablet provides a lower strength that can be prescribed when a more cautious starting dose is needed. One recognised example is treatment initiation in a person with severe liver impairment.
Dapagliflozin dosing and available strengths differ between markets. Patients should therefore follow the instructions supplied with their exact product rather than choosing a strength based only on the brand name.
