There is no single Piretam 1200 mg dosage suitable for every neurological condition. The total daily dose depends on the diagnosis, kidney function, treatment response and other neurological medicines being used.
For cortical myoclonus in adults, established piracetam guidance recommends a starting dose of 7.2 g per day, divided into two or three separate doses. The total daily dose can be increased by 4.8 g every three to four days when required, up to a maximum of 24 g per day under specialist supervision.
The 7.2 g starting dose is equal to six 1200 mg tablets across the entire day. This specialist dosage is used for cortical myoclonus and should not be followed for another condition unless specifically prescribed.
Swallow the tablets whole with water. Do not break or chew them because piracetam has a very bitter taste. Piretam can be taken with or without food, but each dose should be taken at a consistent time.
Piracetam is removed from the body mainly through the kidneys. Older adults and people with reduced kidney function require a lower dose based on creatinine clearance. Severe renal impairment is a contraindication. Do not stop treatment suddenly because this can cause myoclonic jerks to return and may trigger seizures.
