PIM 800 mg benefits depend on the diagnosed condition, prescribed total daily dose and consistent use as part of the complete treatment plan.

Piracetam acts on the membranes surrounding nerve cells. It changes how these membranes behave and supports communication between cells without working as a stimulant or sedative.

The medicine also improves the flexibility of red blood cells and reduces their tendency to stick to blood-vessel walls. It can also reduce platelet aggregation, which explains why additional care is necessary in people with bleeding problems or those taking blood-thinning medicines.

These combined effects are associated with piracetam’s neurological activity. The complete pathway through which it controls cortical myoclonus has not been fully established, but its clinical use as an additional anti-myoclonic treatment is recognised.

There is no single PIM 800 mg dosage suitable for every neurological condition. The prescribed amount depends on the diagnosis, response to treatment, kidney function and other medicines being used.

For cortical myoclonus in adults, established piracetam prescribing information recommends an initial total dose of 7.2 g per day, divided into two or three doses. Under specialist supervision, the total daily dose can be increased by 4.8 g every three to four days, up to a maximum of 24 g per day. These are specialist dosing ranges for cortical myoclonus and must not be used to choose a dose independently.

PIM 800 mg can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water and take divided doses at consistent times. Piracetam leaves the body mainly through the kidneys, so reduced kidney function requires a lower dose. It is contraindicated in severe renal impairment with creatinine clearance below 20 mL/min.

Do not stop piracetam suddenly when it is being used for myoclonus. Abrupt withdrawal can cause the muscle jerks to return and may trigger seizures in some patients.

Common Side Effects

Common PIM 800 mg side effects include nervousness, increased physical activity or uncontrolled movements and weight gain. Other reported effects include sleepiness, weakness, headache, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal discomfort. Speak to a healthcare professional if these effects persist, worsen or interfere with daily activities.

Serious Side Effects

Obtain urgent medical help for facial or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, hives or other signs of a severe allergic reaction. Prompt medical assessment is also required for unusual bruising or bleeding, blood in the urine or stool, severe confusion, hallucinations, loss of balance, or worsening seizures.

PIM 800 mg should not be taken without specialist approval by people with:

• Allergy to piracetam

• Allergy to pyrrolidone derivatives

• Severe renal impairment

• End-stage kidney disease

• Current cerebral haemorrhage

• Huntington’s chorea

• Pregnancy unless clearly necessary

• Breastfeeding during treatment

• Age below 18 years without specialist direction

People with a stomach ulcer, bleeding disorder, previous haemorrhagic stroke or planned surgery require an individual medical assessment before treatment.

Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements being used.

Important interactions include:

• Warfarin

• Acenocoumarol

• Other anticoagulants

• Aspirin

• Clopidogrel

• Other antiplatelet medicines

• Levothyroxine

• Liothyronine

• Other thyroid hormones

Piracetam can affect platelet activity and may increase bleeding concerns when combined with anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicines. Using it with thyroid hormones has been associated with confusion, irritability and sleep disturbance.

Do not stop existing anti-seizure or anti-myoclonic medicines when PIM 800 mg is started unless the treating specialist changes the treatment plan.
