These benefits depend on doxycycline being suitable for the diagnosed condition. It will not help with a viral illness or an infection caused by resistant bacteria.

Bacteria need to make proteins so they can grow, repair themselves, and produce more bacteria. Doxycycline enters susceptible bacterial cells and attaches to a part called the 30S ribosomal subunit.

This blocks the bacteria from joining amino acids together to make new proteins. Without these proteins, the bacteria cannot continue growing normally.

Doxycycline is mainly described as a bacteriostatic antibiotic. This means it stops susceptible bacteria from multiplying, allowing the immune system to control and clear the infection.

For acne, doxycycline also helps reduce inflammation. This can make red, swollen and painful acne spots less severe over time.

For many adult bacterial infections, prescribing guidance may recommend 100 mg every 12 hours on the first day, followed by 100 mg once daily. A healthcare professional may continue 100 mg every 12 hours for more serious infections.

This schedule is not suitable for every condition. Acne, chlamydia, malaria prevention and tick-borne infections can each require a different treatment length or dosing plan.

Common Side Effects
Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, stomach discomfort, headache and a mild skin rash. Doxycycline may also cause heartburn, throat irritation, vaginal yeast infection or increased sensitivity to sunlight. Speak with a healthcare professional if these effects continue or become troublesome.

Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects require immediate medical attention. These may include difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling, a blistering or peeling rash, severe pain when swallowing, persistent watery or bloody diarrhoea, severe headache with blurred vision, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or unusual bruising.

Do not take Doxycycline 100 mg Capsule if you:

• Are allergic to doxycycline.

• Are allergic to another tetracycline antibiotic.

• Are using an expired or damaged supply of doxycycline.

• Are pregnant unless a specialist decides that treatment is necessary.

• Are breastfeeding without discussing treatment with a healthcare professional.

• Are giving it to a child under eight years old without specialist instructions.

Tell the prescriber before treatment if there is a history of liver disease, kidney problems, swallowing difficulties, inflammation of the food pipe, severe diarrhoea, yeast infections or increased pressure around the brain.

Doxycycline may affect developing teeth and bones. It is therefore generally avoided during pregnancy and in young children unless it is needed for a serious or life-threatening infection.

Tell the healthcare provider if any of the following are being used:

• Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium

• Calcium supplements

• Iron supplements

• Bismuth-containing medicines

• Isotretinoin or other oral retinoids

• Warfarin or other anticoagulants

• Carbamazepine

• Phenytoin

• Barbiturates

• Penicillin antibiotics

• Methoxyflurane

• Hormonal contraceptive pills

• Keep the capsules in their original container or blister.

• Protect from direct sunlight.

• Keep away from heat and moisture.

• Do not store in a bathroom or another damp place.

• Keep out of reach of children and pets.

• Do not use damaged or discoloured capsules.
