A-Mox 500 mg

• Treats bacterial infections that are sensitive to amoxicillin.

The medicine will not provide these benefits if the illness is viral or caused by bacteria that are resistant to amoxicillin.

Bacteria need a strong outer wall to remain alive. Amoxicillin blocks the proteins that bacteria use to build this protective wall.

Once the wall becomes weak, the bacteria break apart and die. This allows the immune system to clear the remaining infection.

Some bacteria produce enzymes that can destroy amoxicillin. A-Mox 500 mg may not work against these resistant bacteria because it contains amoxicillin alone and does not contain clavulanic acid.

For adults and children weighing more than 40 kg, amoxicillin may be prescribed as 500 mg every 12 hours for some mild or moderate infections. For severe infections or lower respiratory tract infections, a healthcare provider may prescribe 500 mg every 8 hours.

The correct dosage depends on:

• Type of bacterial infection

• Location of the infection

• Severity of the infection

• Age and body weight

• Kidney function

• Response to treatment

• Results of bacterial tests, when available

Children weighing less than 40 kg usually need a dose calculated according to body weight. A liquid form may be more suitable than a 500 mg capsule.

A-Mox 500 mg should not automatically be taken two or three times daily for every infection. Never change the dose, timing or treatment duration without medical advice.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort and a mild skin rash. A-Mox can also disturb the body’s normal bacteria, which may lead to oral thrush or a vaginal yeast infection. Contact a healthcare professional if these effects continue or become troublesome.

Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects require immediate medical attention. These may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, a severe blistering rash, persistent watery or bloody diarrhoea, severe stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual bruising or seizures.

Before taking A-Mox, tell your healthcare professional if you have: 

• An allergy to amoxicillin

• An allergy to penicillin antibiotics

• A previous severe beta-lactam allergy

• Infectious mononucleosis

Tell the healthcare provider if any of the following are being used:

• Probenecid

• Warfarin or other anticoagulants

• Allopurinol

• Methotrexate

• Other antibiotics

• Oral typhoid vaccine

• Hormonal contraceptive pills

• Other medicines containing amoxicillin

• Herbal products or supplements

Probenecid can keep amoxicillin in the body for longer. Allopurinol may increase the chance of developing a rash, while anticoagulants may require additional blood-clotting checks.

Vomiting or severe diarrhoea can stop an oral contraceptive pill from being absorbed properly. Follow the missed-pill instructions and ask whether additional contraception is required.
