The body produces a substance called angiotensin II, which makes blood vessels tighten and encourages the body to retain salt and water. These actions increase blood pressure.

Telmisartan blocks angiotensin II from attaching to AT1 receptors. This allows the blood vessels to relax and widen, making it easier for blood to flow. As a result, blood pressure falls and the heart does not have to work as hard.

For high blood pressure, telmisartan treatment usually starts at 40 mg once daily, with an approved dose range of 20 mg to 80 mg once daily. Telmaheal 80 mg is at the upper end of this range and is used when this strength is included in the prescription.

For cardiovascular risk reduction in selected high-risk adults, the recommended telmisartan dose is 80 mg once daily. Take the tablet at the same time each day, with or without food.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects include dizziness, diarrhoea, back pain, tiredness, headache, nausea and symptoms similar to a cold or sinus infection. Dizziness is more likely when standing up quickly, particularly at the beginning of treatment. Medical advice is needed if these effects continue or become troublesome.

Serious Side Effects

Seek urgent medical attention for fainting, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, very little urine or severe muscle weakness. Telmisartan can sometimes cause dangerously low blood pressure, kidney problems or high potassium levels. Signs of high potassium include unusual weakness, tingling and a slow or irregular heartbeat.
