These benefits apply only when the condition is caused by a fungus that responds to itraconazole. Itrotab will not improve an infection caused by bacteria or viruses.

A fungal cell has a protective outer membrane. This membrane needs a substance called ergosterol to remain strong and function normally.

Itraconazole blocks an enzyme that fungi use to produce ergosterol. Without enough ergosterol, the fungal membrane becomes weak and damaged. Important substances then leak out of the fungal cell, preventing it from growing and surviving.

As the amount of fungus decreases, symptoms such as itching, redness, scaling and irritation begin to settle. Nail infections improve more slowly because the damaged nail must grow out before a clear and healthy nail becomes visible. 

There is no single Itrotab dosage suitable for every fungal infection. The correct dose depends on the type of infection, the area affected and the length of treatment required.

Itraconazole capsule doses generally range from 100 mg once daily to 200 mg once or twice daily. These are general dosing ranges and should not be used to select a dose without a prescription.

Take Itrotab immediately after a full meal and swallow the capsule whole with water. Take each dose at the scheduled time and complete the prescribed course. If a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless the next dose is nearly due. Do not take two doses together.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhoea, constipation, headache, dizziness and mild skin rash. Changes in liver-enzyme test results can also occur. These effects are not experienced by everyone, but medical advice is needed if they continue, become severe or interfere with eating and drinking.

Serious Side Effects

Serious reactions require immediate medical attention. Warning signs include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, a severe or blistering rash, fainting, an irregular heartbeat, hearing changes, numbness or tingling. Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, severe nausea, and unusual tiredness can indicate liver injury. Shortness of breath, swollen feet or ankles, sudden weight gain and waking at night with breathing difficulty can be signs of heart failure. 

Before taking Itrotab, tell your healthcare professional if you are: 

• Allergic to itraconazole

• Pregnant women unless treating a life-threatening infection

• People with heart failure

• People with ventricular dysfunction

• People with severe liver disease

• People taking contraindicated CYP3A4 medicines

Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements being taken. Important interactions include:

• Antacids

• Proton-pump inhibitors

• H2-receptor blockers

• Rifampicin and rifabutin

• Carbamazepine and phenytoin

• Simvastatin and lovastatin

• Certain heart-rhythm medicines

• Calcium-channel blockers

Do not combine Itrotab with another medicine or supplement without checking with a healthcare professional. Some combinations can reduce itraconazole absorption, while others can cause dangerously high medicine levels or serious heart-related reactions.

• Store between 15°C and 25°C.

• Keep the capsules in their original strip.

• Protect them from direct sunlight.

• Keep them away from excess heat and moisture.

• Do not store them in a bathroom.

• Keep them away from children and pets.

• Return unused capsules to a pharmacy disposal service when available.
