Tydol 100 mg

When prescribed for the right patient and taken as directed, Tydol 100 mg can:

• Relieve severe pain when other suitable treatments are inadequate

• Make short-term recovery more comfortable

• Help a patient rest or carry out necessary activities while pain is being treated

The aim is adequate pain relief with the lowest effective dose for the shortest appropriate time. A higher dose brings a greater risk of harmful effects. 

Tapentadol acts in the brain and spinal cord. It activates opioid receptors involved in pain relief and reduces the reuptake of noradrenaline, a chemical involved in controlling pain signals. Together, these actions can lessen how strongly pain is felt.

Pain relief does not mean that an injury or other underlying problem has healed. Tell the prescriber if pain is changing, getting worse or lasting longer than expected. 

General prescribing guidance for regular tapentadol tablets gives an adult dose range of 50 mg to 100 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain. Tydol 100 mg contains the upper end of that single-dose range in one tablet. It should not be treated as the starting dose for every patient.

The prescriber chooses the dose and duration based on pain severity, previous opioid use, other medicines and medical conditions. People with moderate liver impairment may need a lower strength and a longer gap between doses. Swallow Tydol as directed on the prescription; it can generally be taken with or without food. Do not take extra tablets if pain returns early, and do not change or stop a regular course without speaking to the prescriber. 

Common side effects - Nausea, vomiting, dizziness and sleepiness are among the effects reported most often with tapentadol tablets. Constipation, headache or dry mouth can also occur. Tell your healthcare professional if these effects are persistent or difficult to manage. Do not drive or operate machinery while you feel sleepy or dizzy. 

Serious side effects - Slow breathing, long pauses between breaths, extreme sleepiness or difficulty waking up require emergency medical help. Seek urgent care for a seizure or swelling of the face or throat. Agitation, fever, heavy sweating and muscle twitching also need prompt assessment, particularly if Tydol is being taken with an antidepressant. Tapentadol can cause dependence and overdose; these risks must be taken seriously throughout treatment. 

Do not take Tydol 100 mg if you have:

• An allergy to tapentadol or another tablet ingredient

• Significantly slowed or suppressed breathing

• Acute or severe asthma without appropriate medical monitoring

• A known or suspected bowel obstruction

• Taken an MAOI medicine within the previous 14 days

People with liver disease, lung disease, a seizure history, pregnancy or a history of substance misuse need an individual assessment before tapentadol is prescribed. 

Tell your prescriber about every medicine you take. Important interactions include:

• Benzodiazepines

• Sleeping medicines

• Other opioids

• Pregabalin or gabapentin

• Muscle relaxants

• Antidepressants, including SSRIs and SNRIs

• MAOI medicines

• Alcohol

Combining tapentadol with medicines that cause drowsiness can lead to dangerous sedation and slowed breathing. MAOIs must not be combined with tapentadol, including during the 14 days after stopping an MAOI. Some antidepressant combinations also require assessment because of reported seizures and serotonin syndrome. Do not drink alcohol while taking Tydol. 

• Store Tydol in its original packaging, following the temperature printed on the pack.

• Keep the tablets away from excess heat and moisture.

• Keep them locked away from children, visitors and anyone for whom they were not prescribed.

• Never share the tablets with another person.

• Do not use them after the expiry date.

• Ask a pharmacist about safe disposal of unused tablets.
