Effective HIV treatment can reduce the viral load to an undetectable level. Regular viral-load testing is required to confirm whether treatment is working.

HIV uses an enzyme called reverse transcriptase to change its genetic material and make new copies of the virus.

Emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide provide false building blocks to this enzyme. When HIV tries to use them, the process of creating new viral DNA is interrupted. This prevents the virus from multiplying normally.

During HIV treatment, reducing viral replication lowers the viral load and helps protect CD4 immune cells. During PrEP use, the medicines remain inside vulnerable cells and help stop HIV from establishing an infection after exposure.

The standard adult dose of Tafero EM is one tablet taken once daily, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water and take it at the same time each day.

For HIV-1 treatment, Tafero EM must be taken with other antiretroviral medicines. For PrEP, HIV testing is required before starting and at least once every three months during use. Kidney function and hepatitis B status should also be checked before treatment.

Do not skip doses or stop treatment without medical advice. If a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless the next dose is nearly due. Do not take two tablets together.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, headache, tiredness and stomach discomfort. Dizziness and vomiting can also occur. These effects are often mild, but medical advice is needed if they continue, become severe or make it difficult to take the medicine regularly.

Serious Side Effects

Serious reactions include new or worsening kidney problems, severe liver problems, lactic acidosis and allergic reactions. Seek urgent medical help for reduced urination, swelling, severe weakness, rapid breathing, continuing stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, facial swelling or difficulty breathing. Stopping Tafero EM in a person with hepatitis B can cause the hepatitis infection to become suddenly worse.

• People with unknown HIV status using it for PrEP

• People with confirmed HIV using it alone

• People with significant kidney impairment

• People taking other tenofovir-containing medicines

• People taking other emtricitabine-containing medicines

• Store Tafero EM below 30°C.

• Keep the tablets in their original container.

• Keep the container tightly closed.

• Protect the medicine from sunlight and moisture.

• Do not store it in a bathroom.

• Keep it away from children and pets.

• Do not use damaged or discoloured tablets.

• Do not use the medicine after its expiry date.
